Under participation of different interest groups, A1 Telekom Austria Group has conducted a materiality analysis and thus jointly defined it's CSR strategy’s focal points. For purposes of sustainable corporate development, the most significant topics were summed up into four action areas and supported by clear goals and specific key figures.

A1 Telekom Austria Group’s high-performing and safe network infrastructure forms the backbone of the digital knowledge society. In addition, as a driver of digitalization A1 Telekom Austria Group provides entire industries, business models and societal as well as personal areas of life with a wide range of positive development possibilities.

Visual, data-intensive content becomes ever more important in the use of the Internet. Business-related and private data communication, social networking, music streaming, entertainment and infotainment: All together, they yield a dynamically increasing demand for bandwidth. A1 Telekom Austria Group meets this enormously increasing interest for bandwidth with a tailored portfolio of products and services. Targets 2016 - 2018
  • LTE coverage of 80 % within A1 Telekom Austria Group (achieved)
  • Coverage of over 60 % of Austrian households with a bandwidth of at least 40 Mbps on a pure fixed-line network (former product logic: coverage of 70 % with 30 Mbps) (achieved)
  • Identification and promotion of marketable innovations, for instance via start-up initiatives (achieved)

Selected measures and projects from the "Technology & Innovation" action area:

  • Smart meter roll-out: In a matter of four years, 187,000 meters are converted to smart meters for Stromnetz Graz GmbH & Co. KG.
  • EU’s Helix Nebula initiative uses A1 Digital’s Exoscale platform
    The Helix Nebula initiative is a partnership between industry, space aviation, and science. The aim is to use open cloud services to establish a dynamic, seamlessly integrated ecosystem between research institutions and companies. Exoscale, a subsidiary of A1 Digital is the technology provider for the project.
  • New Datacenter in Austria
    The new A1 Next Generation Data Center opened in Vienna in December 2018. To that end, the Group invested a total of around EUR 40 mn in financial years 2017 and 2018. A powerful network and highly avail- able data centers form the basis for digitalization, for which A1 intends to be the preferred partner for Austrian business and private customers. The A1 Next Generation Data Center is a georedundant grouping of A1’s data centers, meaning it offers a combination of cloud, hosting, and housing services. The new data center represents the convergence of telecommuni- cations and IT services without data having to leave the closed, highly secure chain.


Information and communication technologies can contribute to a more ecological and thus, sustainable, style of life. That is why for A1 Telekom Austria Group, the path towards a responsible development of its core business involves the continuous reduction of its ecological foot print. This is because it is impoertant to find inoovative solutions to challenge such as climate change.

Selected measures and projects from the "The Environment" action area:

  • Photovoltaic: In 2018, the Austrian subsidiary expanded its photovoltaic systems at the A1 Technology Center located in Vienna Arsenal. A further 312 solar modules were installed on around 516 m2. The amount of electricity produced per year is expected to be around 90,000 kWh – the equivalent
    of the electricity requirement. In the summer of 2016, Belarusian subsidiary A1 opened its first solar power park. Since then, 85,000 solar panels distributed across an area of some 41 hectares produce some 19.4 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually. 
  • Hybrid exchange: In 2017, A1 in Belarius equipped its first mobile base station with a stand-alone, hybrid power supply system. The mobile base station system now draws its power from several solar panels. To ensure there is an adequate power supply available overnight, this solar energy is stored. Diesel generators are used on a short-term basis in adverse weather conditions only.
  • Life cycle management: In 2016, Bulgarian subsidiary A1 Bulgaria opened a new recycling centre aimed at using resources already in operation as long as possible, without physically or chemically converting them.


Digitalization is accompanied by a profund change of the foundations and methods of working. With the promotion of constant learning and group-wide uniform guidelines, A1 Telekom Austria Group is positioning itself as ‘Digital employer of choice’.

Selected measure from the "Employees" action area:

  • Digitilization promotes diversity: Working together simply and efficiently. Independently of space and time. Across different countries and business areas. Without rigid structures or hierarchical boundaries.
    With strengths like these, digital workplaces are also conducive to diversity within teams. An important aspect for the A1 Telekom Austria Group in this regard is to hire an increasing number of female experts for management and senior management positions. There are already a number of examples to prove that this concept works at a top level. For example, Eva Zehetner, Group Human Resources Director, and Natali Delić, Senior Technical Director for the Republic of Serbia and for Slovenia. Generally speaking, mobile, flexible working and the option of taking on part-time management roles are instrumental in enabling men and women to establish a work-life balance.
  • Digital Transformation & Employees: In order to further tap the potential of digitalization and to foster digital transformation within the A1 Telekom Austria Group, employees and members of the Group Leadership Team were given the opportunity to join the “Digital Shift Learning Path” in 2018. This mentored online learning program consisted of three phases. In the final Phase was designed to anchor the acquired knowledge by applying it in three community challenges (“Agile Working”, “Learning Culture”, and “Digital Manifesto”) via the group-wide social collaboration platform “Workplace”.


The A1 Telekom Austria Group began long ago to transform itself from an infrastructure, connectivity and broadband provider into the ideal digitalisation partner. At the same time, the Group also specifically promotes the competent and safe use of digital media to ensure that the associated opportunities and potential are available to as many people as possible in wider society.

Selected measures and projects from the "Society" action area:

  • Digital equal opportunities: As milestone in this group-wide initiative, the North Macedonian subsidiary launched a media literacy initiative in February 2018 for children with the aim of teaching them how to use the Internet safely and educating them about potential dangers of social networks. The workshops were held in two languages – Macedonian and Albanian. In the framework of the Internet for All initiative, Slovenian subsidiary A1 Slovenia — in cooperation with the University of Maribor — designed and produced a brochure titled Varna uporaba mobilnih telefonov (‘On the safe use of mobile phones’) for senior citizens.
  • Blogging Plus: ‘Blogging Plus’ in Austria, with the aim of establishing a greater understanding of blogging among senior citizens. It explains how a blog works, what topics are suitable for blogs, how to create a blog and what safety aspects need to be considered. Theory is translated into practice in a series of training exercises, using open source technologies.
  • Digital Study room:By means of the A1 Internet for All Campus, the Austrian subsidiary has been offering tutoring for children and adolescents since 2016. The digital study room gives them the chance to research presentation topics or do homework online.
